Shanghai farce is a new type of opera gradually formed in the late Qing Dynasty and the early Republic of China to the middle of the Anti Japanese War, which was influenced by Chinese and foreign comedies, farces and local operas in the south of the Yangtze River. It is popular in many areas of Shanghai, Jiangsu and Zhejiang, and is welcomed by the audience.
In the 1940s, there were more than ten famous comic troupes, including Xiaoxiao troupe and Tianbao troupe. Since the founding of the people's Republic of China, farce has become one of the major operas in Shanghai. In history, famous actors include Xu Zhuodai (Xu Banmei), Wang Neng, Liu Chunshan, Jiang Xiaoxiao, Zhu Xiangfei, Yao mushuang, Zhou Baichun, Yang Huasheng, Wen Binbin, etc.; they have accumulated a large number of excellent plays such as Sanmao student idea, 72 lodgers, little Shandong to Shanghai, manyuanchunse, female barber, muddleheaded yeniang, etc. By the end of the 1980s, Yan shunkai and Qian Cheng had become the leading figures of drama. Led by Shanghai comic opera company, a municipal art group, they had created and performed a number of excellent plays with modern themes, such as "excellent answers", "sex and fate", "baby under the street lamp", "a Hun's new biography", "GPT abnormal" and "authentic family members" And so on. Many plays have also been adapted into films and broadcast nationwide. There are dozens of excellent repertoires preserved, such as "making trouble in Ming Lun Tang", "burning tofu shop" and "blind man borrowing umbrella".
Comic plays have always been based on modern themes and are good at reflecting the life of the people. The audience regards Shanghai farce as "a happy art". Farce is the only type of drama in China that specializes in comedy and farce. It is not only a representative of Shanghai culture, but also a typical of Shanghai culture. Its traditional repertoire preserves the folk custom of Shanghai and the unique Secularity of "shiliyangchang", and its creative method is of great value to carry forward the fine tradition of Shanghai school, to study the city of Shanghai, and to preserve the dialect and folk custom of Shanghai.
