Dalian will build the world's largest offshore airport

According to the website of Voice of America on December 20th, the Chinese government has decided to build a super large offshore airport in the strategically important Bohai Bay. Once completed in 2035, this airport will become the world's largest offshore artificial island airport

The report states that the Dalian Jinzhou Bay International Airport, currently under construction, is China's first offshore airport. Its construction refers to the construction technology and methods of large offshore international airports such as Osaka Kansai International Airport in Japan and New York LaGuardia Airport in the United States, and adopts offshore land reclamation to build artificial islands

The report points out that China, known as the "infrastructure maniac," often showcases its strength through large-scale or super large infrastructure projects

According to Chinese media reports, the Dalian Jinzhou Bay International Airport project was launched as early as 2003, and the airport site was determined to be in the Jinzhou Bay area in 2005. According to the plan at that time, the land reclamation and island building project should start in 2008, obtain approval in 2022, and officially commence construction in October 2023

Public information shows that the reclaimed area of Dalian Jinzhou Bay International Airport is approximately 6.54 kilometers long, 3.5 kilometers wide, and covers an area of 20.87 square kilometers. The airport plans to construct 4 runways, with an initial construction of 2 runways. The runway is 3600 meters long and can accommodate the world's largest civil aviation aircraft. A terminal building with a total area of 900000 square meters will also be constructed within the airport

After its completion, the airport is expected to accommodate 540000 flights per year, with an annual passenger throughput of 80 million. The first phase of the project is scheduled to be completed and put into operation in 2035

According to CNN, once completed, this airport will surpass Hong Kong International Airport and Kansai International Airport in Osaka, Japan, becoming the world's largest offshore artificial island airport

According to Hong Kong's South China Morning Post, the area of Hong Kong International Airport is only 12.48 square kilometers, while the area of Osaka Kansai International Airport in Japan is only 10.5 square kilometers, both of which are smaller than Dalian Jinzhou Bay International Airport's area of over 20 square kilometers

According to reports, Dalian has a permanent population of 7.5 million and has become an important transportation hub in Northeast China due to its proximity to Japan and South Korea. At present, Dalian has Zhoushuizi International Airport, which has been in operation for nearly a century and has undergone multiple expansions. It has reached its limit and cannot expand further to the surrounding areas

CNN pointed out that China's aviation market is developing rapidly and will soon surpass the United States to become the world's largest aviation market. The construction of new airports is also a sign of the rapid development of China's aviation industry

Beijing's second major airport, Daxing International Airport, officially opened in 2019. Chinese officials stated at the time that there was strong demand in the Chinese aviation industry market, and by 2035, the country would need 450 airports to meet the travel needs of the public
