The folk dance eighteen butterflies, also known as "colorful butterflies welcome spring", is popular in Yongkang City, Zhejiang Province. It originated from the God entertaining activities of Fangyan Hugong temple fair in Song Dynasty. In the autumn of 1946, Wang Chunshan, a villager, and others were inspired by the action of Zhang He, who carried the shell props on his back. They made butterfly props and used them in the carefully choreographed dance formation, thus forming the colorful and unique eighteen butterflies.
Eighteen butterflies can perform on the stage, square, scenic spot and even the streets and alleys. During the performance, 18 girls dressed in bamboo and silk act as colorful butterflies and dance with Huaxian.
