Jingzhou Huagu opera is one of the main local operas in Hubei Province, formerly known as "Huaguzi" and "tianmian Huagu opera", which was renamed "Jingzhou Huagu opera" in 1981. After the end of Ming Dynasty, it was a kind of local opera gradually developed by absorbing the repertoire, tune and performance of other operas in the folk singing forms of three stick drum, walking on stilts and picking lotus boats in Jianghan Plain. It was popular in Mianyang (including today's Honghu), Tianmen, Qianjiang, Jianli, Hanchuan, Jingshan and other counties, and gradually spread to the neighboring Zhongxiang, Jingmen, Jiangling, Yingcheng, Yunmeng, yangjihu Yueyang, Huarong, Nanxian, Lixian, Changde in the South and Chongyang, Tongcheng, Puqi in the southeast of Hubei Province.

Jingzhou Huagu opera music belongs to the Department of playing gongs, singing is divided into two categories: main tune and minor tune. According to statistics, there are 197 plays of Jingzhou Huagu opera. Representative plays include Da Lian Xiang, Hua Qiang Hui and Yuan Ye Qing Qiu. Through the efforts of several generations of literature and art workers, the singing music of Jingzhou Huagu opera is becoming more and more mature, the performance form is becoming more and more perfect, and the content of the play is becoming more and more rich, which is favored by the people of Jianghan Plain.

In recent years, the development and inheritance of Jingzhou Huagu opera has encountered a crisis. The exploration, rescue and protection of Jingzhou Huagu opera will play a certain role in enriching and improving the history of Chinese opera, Chinese music and excavating the folk culture and art of Jingchu.
