Anyuan gate is the north gate of Xi'an city wall. It was built when the city wall was built in the Ming Dynasty, officially named anyuanmen. During the revolution of 1911, the northern gate tower was burned during the uprising's attack on Manchuria.
North Gate
Anyuan gate, the north gate of Xi'an city wall, is located in the west of the middle of the north wall. It was originally located in the middle of the palace wall at the junction of the Taiji palace and the East Palace in Chang'an of Tang Dynasty. It was separated from the north wall when the new city was built by Han in the late Tang Dynasty. From 1374 to 1378, when the city of Xi'an was expanded northward, Yuanmen was newly built, which lasted from the Qing Dynasty to the Republic of China. Today, the Yuanmen gate is located in Wengcheng, Jianlou and erchongmendong. In addition, two ticket holes are opened on both sides of the gate for vehicles and pedestrians to pass through.
Historical evolution
Anyuan gate was originally located in the middle part of the palace wall at the junction of Taiji palace and East Palace in Chang'an city of Tang Dynasty. When Han Jian rebuilt the new city in the late Tang Dynasty, it was separated from the north city wall. In the seventh to eleventh year of Hongwu (1374-1378) of Ming Dynasty, when Xi'an Fu city was expanded northward, Yuanmen was newly built.
At the beginning of Hongwu Period in Ming Dynasty, there were urn cities on the outside, and the main tower and arrow tower on the inside and the urn cities respectively. In 1636, sun chuanting, the governor of Shaanxi Province, built a new moon city outside the urn City, built a gate tower on the moon city, and changed the fixed bridge over the moat into a suspension bridge.
In the early years of the Republic of China, the gate building, suspension bridge and moon city were demolished due to the construction of bridges on the moat.
In 1983, the Jianlou of Anyuan gate collapsed due to the rainstorm, and the building body tilted. It was repaired first, and then reinforced and renovated comprehensively, and has been followed up to now.
In 1911, Shaanxi Province responded to the Wuchang Uprising. Under the leadership of Zhang Fengzhen, the uprising army besieged Mancheng on the east side of Anyuan gate. In this war, the main building of Anyuan gate was burned down and no longer exists.
Anyuanmen is no longer responsible for urban traffic. In 1954, two ticket holes were opened on both sides of the gate for vehicles and pedestrians.
