The predecessor of Hangzhou Normal University can be traced back to the two-level official normal school in Zhejiang Province, which was founded in 1908. In 1913, it was renamed the first normal school in Zhejiang Province. In 1978, it was approved by the State Council to establish Hangzhou Normal University. Since 2000, Hangzhou Institute of education and Hangzhou Medical College have been merged into Hangzhou Normal University. In 2007, it was renamed Hangzhou Normal University. As of March 2014, the university has campuses such as Cangqian, Xiasha, yuhuangshan and gudangwan, covering an area of nearly 1840 mu, with an area of nearly 970000 square meters. The total value of fixed assets of the university is 1.83 billion yuan, the total value of teaching equipment is 600 million yuan, and the library has a collection of 2.39 million books. There are 18100 full-time students, including 1897 postgraduates and 15987 undergraduates.
