All units of Wudongde Hydropower Station are put into operation

Kunming, June 16 (Xinhua) at 11:12 on June 16, the last unit of Wudongde Hydropower Station, the seventh largest hydropower station in the world and the fourth largest hydropower station in China, successfully completed the 72 hour trial operation, which was successfully integrated into China Southern Power Grid and officially put into operation for power generation. So far, all 12 units of Wudongde Hydropower Station have been put into operation.

Wudongde Hydropower Station is located on the Jinsha River at the junction of Luquan County, Kunming City, Yunnan Province and Huidong County, Liangshan Prefecture, Sichuan Province. It is a national major project to implement the "west to East power transmission". The development task is mainly power generation, taking into account flood control and shipping. A total of 12 hydroelectric generating units with a single unit capacity of 850000 kW are installed in the power station, which is the largest hydroelectric generating unit in the world with a total installed capacity of 10.2 million KW.

Wudongde Hydropower Station project started construction at the end of 2015, and the first batch of units will be put into operation on June 29, 2020. Wang Jintao, director of Wudongde power plant of Three Gorges group, said that as of June 15, 2021, the power plant has generated nearly 24.5 billion kwh, equivalent to replacing about 7.68 million tons of standard coal. Without these clean hydropower projects, China will emit about 19.2 million tons of carbon dioxide and 65000 tons of sulfur dioxide due to the use of fossil fuels.

Yang Zongli, director of the Wudongde Project Construction Department of the Three Gorges group, said that since the power station was put into operation, it has given full play to the comprehensive benefits of power generation, flood control and promoting local economic and social development, helped to realize the goal of "carbon peak and carbon neutralization", and promoted the high-quality development of the Yangtze River economic belt and the coordinated development of regional economy. After all units are put into operation, the power supply of Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macao will be further guaranteed. The power station can generate about 38.9 billion kilowatt hours a year when its units are fully operational.
