Matouqin is a typical representative of Mongolian music culture. Its shape, production materials, sound quality, timbre, music performance style and performance method all reflect the Mongolian character connotation, fully reflect the historical form of Mongolian nomadic life, and express the Mongolian thinking and understanding of natural universe philosophy.

Mongolian Matouqin has a long history. It existed in the period of Mongolian formation. In the long-term historical development, Matouqin has formed different schools with distinct regional color, which are closely related to the internal and external gathering, separation and reunion as well as historical changes of Mongolian nationality. It can be said that along with Mongolian people, Matouqin has come all the way from grassland and history, which carries rich historical and cultural information.

Matouqin is not only played on some formal and grand occasions, but also appears in folk wedding ceremonies, family gatherings and other daily activities; it can be used as accompaniment or solo repertoire. Matouqin has a profound social and folk traditional foundation, and plays a social function of spreading culture, cultivating sentiment, changing customs and so on.

The traditional repertoire of Matouqin is mostly evolved from folk songs, which can be divided into five categories: 1. Original folk songs, such as zhuselian and bayaling; 2. Heroic epic tunes, such as Benma tune and zhantiao; 3. Mabu tune, namely the tune expressing the image of horse; 4. Qin tune developed from folk songs, such as heyinhua and modlie; 5. Ancient Han tunes, such as Pu'an mantra 》Liu qingniang, etc.

Matouqin is highly respected in Mongolian culture and has become an important form of Mongolian culture. In recent decades, the development of Matouqin has encountered serious difficulties. In history, there are four traditional performing schools of Matouqin, each of which has its own traditional repertoire. Today, however, the number of inheritors of Matouqin is becoming less and less, and the loss of repertoire is serious, so it is urgent to protect it.
