Introduction to whipped cattle

Whipping cattle is a traditional sport loved by Hui people. It comes from nomadic life and is a necessary item for Eid al AdhA. Hui whipped cattle are scattered in Zhejiang, Henan, Shandong and other Hui settlements. In terms of its inheritance, skills, appreciation and scale of activities, "Jiaxing whipped cattle" in Nanhu District of Jiaxing City is unique. According to jiaxingzhi records, "Jiaxing guanniu" began when the Hui people moved south to Jiaxing, Zhejiang Province in the Yuan Dynasty, and gradually formed folk sports activities held in festive festivals. It has a history of more than 600 years.

Jiaxing whipped cattle has simple and strict rules and unique process. First, the assistant teases the bull until the bull is angry. Facing the bull whose feelers are like swords and thunderous, the bull thrower fights with it barehanded, seizes the opportunity to hold the horn tightly with both hands, and uses flexible techniques such as twisting, carrying and pressing to throw the bull to the ground. The scene is breathtaking and spectacular. The judging standard of Jiaxing whipped cattle depends on the skill of whipped cattle and the different types of cattle falling to the ground. There are several types and techniques of whipping cattle, such as single arm whipping, double arm whipping, shoulder whipping, shoulder whipping, etc. the standard of whipping cattle is divided into "losing feet", "falling to the ground", "four feet facing the sky" and so on, with "four feet facing the sky" as the highest level.

The inheritors of Jiaxing whipped cattle performed their unique skills at the national minority sports meeting for four consecutive times. The characteristics of Jiaxing bullfight are that the bullfighters rely on their martial arts internal skills to support the bottom, fight bravely with the bull with their bare hands, and throw the bull to the ground without hurting the bull. It is different from the cruel killing bullfight, which reflects the simple style of Chinese traditional bullfight and the aesthetic trend of "Chinese bullfight" winning by skill.

In the past 20 or 30 years, because of historical and economic reasons, Jiaxing guanniu has been on and off. In recent years, with the support of the local government, Jiaxing guanniu heritage and protection base has been established.
