A brief introduction to the Yellow Emperor ceremony (Jinyun Xuanyuan ceremony)

Applicant: Jinyun County, Zhejiang Province

Xuanyuan's sacrificial ceremony is a kind of Chinese ancestor worship custom which is still existing in Jinyun County, Zhejiang Province.

Xuanyuan is another name for the Yellow Emperor in ancient times. Jinyun is an official name of the Yellow Emperor, and also a nickname of the Yellow Emperor. Jinyun County was built in the first year of Dengfeng (696) in Wuzhou Wansui, named after the ancient Jinyun Mountain. Jinyun's sacrifice to Xuanyuan family can be traced back to the Han Dynasty. In the Eastern Jin Dynasty, "Jinyun hall" was built in Jinyun Mountain. In the Tianbao period of Tang Dynasty, "Jinyun hall" was changed into "Huangdi Temple" by Emperor Xuanzong of Tang Dynasty. Jinyun is the only place to offer sacrifices to Emperor Xuanyuan in southern China.

The Xuanyuan's sacrifice in Jinyun, which has been handed down from generation to generation, is divided into spring (Qingming) and autumn (Chongyang) sacrifices, in the form of Yellow Emperor's ancestral hall worship, local ancestral temple worship or their own "Daotan" (courtyard of residential quadrangle), etc. The large-scale sacrifices were held in the Yellow Emperor's ancestral temple, and the worshippers were divided into main sacrifice, accompany sacrifice, and participation sacrifice. The sacrificial rites include beating drums, striking bells, respectfully reading sacrificial texts, offering three sacrifices and five grains, offering yellow rice wine and flowers, offering music and dance, etc. the atmosphere is solemn and warm. During the ceremony, various local folk performances, such as steel fork, board (cloth) dragon, board lion, bamboo horse, dry boat, Yangko, waist drum, Tongdian whip, dumb back crazy, etc., were colorful. In recent years, the local people have actively participated in the memorial activities. At the same time, a large number of people from neighboring counties and cities, Huangling in Shaanxi Province and Xinzheng in Henan Province, as well as compatriots from Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan and overseas Chinese have also been attracted to participate, which plays an important role in enhancing the sense of national identity.
