Grey sculpture, commonly known as "huipi", is a traditional sculpture art popular in Guangzhou, Guangdong Province. It is mainly distributed in the urban area of Guangzhou, Zengcheng and Conghua. According to records, the gray sculpture appeared in the Tang Dynasty. Gray sculpture was widely used in the Song Dynasty. In the Zengcheng Zhengguo temple built in the third year of Qingyuan (1197) of the Southern Song Dynasty, there was a gray sculpture called "Dragon Boat ridge". In the Ming and Qing Dynasties, gray sculpture was widely used in ancestral halls, temples and luxury houses. Lime plastic has a set of unique technology, it takes lime as the main material, has the advantages of acid resistance, alkali resistance and temperature resistance, and is very suitable for the humid and hot climate in Guangzhou. In addition, the gray plastic does not need to be fired, and can be constructed on site, which has the flexibility and convenience of adapting measures to local conditions and materials. Guangzhou grey plastic is mainly used for decoration of door frame, gable top, eaves ridge and pavilions. It is rich in subject matter, vivid in shape and gorgeous in color, showing distinctive Lingnan regional characteristics. In order to reduce the impact of Typhoon on ridge ornaments, craftsmen will leave decorative ventilation holes between the shaped scenes or patterns according to geographical conditions and actual needs. At present, under the impact of modern civilization, the traditional construction industry tends to decline. Affected by it, the development of grey plastic is not ideal. It is urgent for the relevant parties to invest in the rescue and protection work as soon as possible.
