Introduction to paper cutting (Yantai paper cutting)
Applicant: Yantai City, Shandong Province
Yantai paper-cut has a long history and is well-known in Chinese folk art. As early as the Qing Dynasty, paper-cut was popular in Yantai, Shandong Province.
There are many styles of Yantai paper-cut, including monochrome paper-cut, Gouhua dyeing paper-cut, color matching paper-cut and color contrast paper-cut. Traditional monochrome paper-cut is mostly made of red paper, red but not gorgeous, pleasing to the eye. On the basis of paper cutting, ink lines are outlined and then color is applied. In the late Qing Dynasty, Yantai Gouhua paper-cut was more than half a century earlier than the dotted paper-cut in Yuxian County, Hebei Province. Color matching paper-cut is mainly spread in Laizhou City. It is a complete work made of various color paper-cut parts. Colored paper-cut, also known as "paper-cut", is most famous for wall flowers in Laizhou and Zhaoyuan. In the production, the basic image is carved out with black paper, and then various kinds of colored paper are pasted or dyed in the hollowed out place, and the work is completed.
Yantai paper-cut presents the characteristics of simple and natural, strong randomness, often good at using homophonic pun and other techniques to express the auspicious and festive meaning, with a wide range of mass. It is a living fossil of national folk culture, which can provide reference for folklore, sociology and other aspects of research. At present, due to the changes of the times and the development of science and technology, the number of people who can appreciate and inherit this ancient art is decreasing. With the death of old artists, some paper-cut techniques have been lost. Yantai paper-cut is on the verge of extinction, rescue and protection is urgent.
