In the early Qing Dynasty, it was a nomadic area under the jurisdiction of the Mongolian Darhan king. In 1950, it was renamed Maolin District 8. In March 1956, it was divided into two townships. In March 1963, it was merged into Maolin town. As of June 2020, Maolin town has 3 communities and 27 administrative villages.
