Yima town got its name because the name of the town government came from the Manchu word "Yima" (meaning goat).

In 1914, it belonged to three police districts. In 1938, Yima village was established. In January 1949, it belonged to 14 districts (Yima District).

In September 1958, the post horse commune was established.

In December 1983, Yima commune was transformed into Yima township.

In October 1993, Yima township was changed to Yima town.
