The site of "Xilin missionary case" is located in Ding'an Town, Tianlin county. Since 1852, the French invaders sent the Catholic priest Ma Lai from Anlong, Guizhou Province to Ding'an Town, Tianlin county. In the name of missionary, he tried to take Ding'an town as a stronghold to carry out illegal activities. Malai and other people have no government and act wantonly, which arouses the national indignation of Tianlin county. In February 1856, Zhang Ming, the governor of Xilin County, beheaded Ma Lai and his faithful followers Bai Xiaoman and Cao GUI (female) in Ding'an church according to the law. This was the "Xilin church case" which shocked the whole country at that time. Later, Napoleon III of France used this as an excuse to collude with the British Invaders to launch the second Opium War against China, and forced the Qing government to build a large-scale Catholic Church in Ding'an town of Xilin County. From then on, Ding'an town became a base for French missionaries to propagate foreign religion. In view of the special historical significance that the "Xilin religious case" was the prelude to the climax of modern Chinese people's struggle against foreign religions, the government of the autonomous region listed it as a cultural relic protection unit in 1994.
