Xinjian District, subordinate to Nanchang City, Jiangxi Province, is located in the northwest of the downtown area of Nanchang. In the fifth year of Wude (622) of Tang Dynasty, Xichang was established as a county, and in the eighth year of Wude (625), Xichang was merged into Nanchang.

In the sixth year of the Taiping reign of the Song Dynasty (981), 16 townships in the northwest of Nanchang county (now part of Fengxin and Yongxiu) were designated to build another county, named Xinjian County.

In the Yuan Dynasty, the newly built County belonged to Longxing Prefecture of xingzhongshu Province in Jiangxi Province.

In the Ming Dynasty, the newly built County belonged to Jiangxi Hongdu Prefecture, later known as Nanchang Prefecture.

In the Qing Dynasty, the newly built County belonged to the office of the Jiangxi provincial governor.

On August 5, 2015, the State Council officially approved the adjustment plan of some administrative divisions of Nanchang City, agreed to cancel the new county and establish a New District of Nanchang City, taking the administrative region of the original new County as the administrative region of the new district.
