Marco Polo Plaza

Marco Polo square in Tianjin is located in the original Italian Concession in Hebei District of Tianjin city. It is the only Italian Concession in modern China and the only Italian Concession outside China.

The 13.6-meter statue of the goddess of peace in Marco Polo square was built in 1923. Designed by Italian sculptor Giuseppe Boni. The original sculpture was demolished in the 1950s, and the Italian style street was rebuilt when it was rebuilt.

In June 1902, the Italian Minister gallina signed an agreement with Tang Shaoyi, the Tianjin Customs Road, to build a perfect, colorful and unique Italian Garden Villa complex in Marco Polo square from 1908 to 1916.

Statue of the goddess of peace

Located in the center of the square, the statue of the goddess of peace was built to commemorate the victory of the first World War. It was designed by Giuseppe Boni, a famous Italian sculptor. After completion, it was transported from Italy to Tianjin via Shanghai. The square is composed of the statue of the goddess of peace and six typical Mediterranean style villas in southern Italy. The main sculptures include fountain pool, pedestal, Roman column and statue of the goddess of peace, It is 13.6 meters high and made of granite. Four European statues are decorated on the top of the base. The top of the column is a flying bronze statue of the goddess of peace, holding an olive branch, symbolizing the eternal theme of "friendship and peace". Light construction is based on warm colors, light and shade matching, scattered, giving people a subtle, warm, leisure, quiet, comfortable feeling.

Construction history

In June 1902, the Italian Minister gallina signed an agreement with Tang Shaoyi, the Tianjin Customs Road, to build a perfect, colorful and unique Italian Garden Villa complex in Marco Polo square from 1908 to 1916. The decoration of the buildings of all ethnic groups is roughly the same. The first floor is the living room and living room; the second floor is the bedroom and toilet. In recent years, with the development of Tianjin, Tianjin government decided to take the rental area along the Haihe River as a highlight of the city's tourism. The reconstruction of Haihe River gives Marco Polo Plaza a chance to restore its original appearance. The landmark sculpture in the center of Marco Polo square integrates functionality, artistry and modernity. Based on the collection, collation and analysis of the historical data of the original sculpture, the reconstruction plan is designed to reproduce the original architectural mode and reflect the original European style. The sculpture in the square is 13.6 meters high and is of European classical style. On each side of the base of the column, there are reliefs of human heads, under which there are water spouts to spray water on all sides. The outer ring of the column base is a 10 meter diameter fountain with three groups of fountains of different heights. The crossed water flowers form a unique landscape. The bronze statue of the goddess of peace, which is 2 meters high above the base of the pillar, spreads its wings to fly.
