Jiuding Mountain

Jiuding Mountain, also known as "Jiuding Yunfeng", is located at the junction of Yuanxiang town and yuanxiangbi Township, 10km north of Xiangyun County, Yunnan Province (Xiangbi township has been integrated into Xiangcheng town as a whole).

Jiuding Mountain belongs to Hengduan Mountain system. It is called Jiuding Mountain because of its dangerous situation and nine peaks.

Environmental Science

Jiuding temple was founded in Hongwu Period of Ming Dynasty. It was repaired twice by Zhengde and Jiajing, and expanded in Qing Dynasty and Republic of China. Now it includes Tuzhu temple, Miaosheng Pavilion, Huayan Pavilion, Sanjiao Pavilion, Mituo Pavilion, Bixia temple, Gufo cave, Pilu Pavilion, Yufeng Pavilion, qianhuatai Pavilion, etc. Jiuding Mountain, 3117 meters above sea level, is also called Jiufeng Mountain because of its nine peaks. The nine peaks are named after their shapes, namely, forbidden foot, lion roar, Lanxia, Zhaohe, Emei, Shixian, Zhongxiu, diyun and Jingtai. There are Bixia cave, Guanyin cave, Chaoyang cave, Mituo cave, Yinmao cave and so on. In front of Jiuding temple, there are two pagodas on Jiuding Mountain. The pagodas and temples form a wonderful scene. When you climb the top of Jiuding Mountain, you can have a panoramic view of Xiangyun dam. Jiuding Mountain is one of the famous scenic spots in Xiangyun, with numerous tourists and endless visitors.

You can see the majestic appearance of Jiuding Mountain when you drive on Chuda Expressway near xiaoguancun reservoir in Xiangyun. Jiuding Mountain, which is in sight, is surrounded by clouds all the year round, just like the green smoke from the mountain stream. There are clouds in the mountain, and there are mountains in the clouds. Close to Jiuding Mountain, you will realize that the mountain here is extraordinary, the peaks are extremely dangerous, the rocks and ravines are towering, the mountains are stacked with obstacles, and the cliffs and steep walls are dangerous.

Guangxu "Yunnan county annals" contains: "nine peaks abrupt, look like clusters of green lotus." Looking at Jiuding Mountain from afar, it gives people a feeling that there are mountains in the mountains and clouds are in the mountains. Many peaks overlap. From different directions, nine peaks look like Fengming, Shihou, Lanxia, Zhaohe, Emei, Shixian, Zhongxiu, Lingxiao and Feitian.

Cultural Relic

"If the mountain is not high, there will be immortals; if the abyss is not deep, there will be dragons." As early as the Tang Dynasty, people began to build Jiuding temple complex in Jiuding Mountain. During the Jiajing period of the Ming Dynasty, sengmingji built wufei pavilion with a storey, and later built Huayan Pavilion, kunlu Pavilion, Zhiguang temple, Yufeng temple, Wangchun Pavilion, Bixia temple, Longquan Temple, Sanjiao Pavilion, Miaosheng Pavilion, etc. Among them, the twin towers of Jiuding temple, located beside Yufeng temple in Jiuding Mountain, were built in 154 A.D. in the 19th year of Jiajing reign of Ming Dynasty. They are composed of South and North towers, 60 meters apart. The south tower is 9 meters high and divided into 9 levels. It is a solid square brick tower with dense eaves and a pedestal. The eaves are made of three layers of square bricks between the levels. The lower layer of square bricks is dog tooth shaped. There is a niche hole on each side of the level 3 to 8, with a pottery relief statue embedded in it. The marble steles on the north and south sides of the top level are engraved with Buddhist classics and the time of building the tower. The North Tower, 7 meters high, is a solid hexagonal brick tower with dense eaves, with a total of 7 levels. The North Tower and the south tower have their own shapes, which echo each other.

When you leave Jiudingshan ancient buildings and look back, you suddenly find that Jiudingshan is like a giant dragon soaring into the clouds, with nine peaks looming in the clouds.
