Daxingshan Fort

Daxingshan fort is located in the south of Daxing West, the southernmost part of Gangkou town. It is a well preserved fort in Pinghai. Facing the sea in the East, West and south, the terrain is dangerous, easy to defend and difficult to attack, so it is a must for military strategists in the past dynasties.

Brief introduction of battery

On the eve of the Opium War, the imperialist powers constantly sent troops to invade China. In order to resist foreign aggression, in 1717, the local military affairs of Guangdong and Guangxi were concurrently in charge of grain and rates, and the right servant of the Ministry of war and the right deputy of the ducha yuan donated money to build forts and military fortresses here. The fort is made of gneiss, with a circumference of 295m, an average height of 3.5m and a width of 2.55m. Northeast each has a stone gate, 1.96 meters high, 1.63 meters wide. According to the inscriptions, there were 22 barracks and 1 gunpowder Bureau (depot) in the fort at that time, which were garrisoned by 600 anbing and 1 general. The fort is rectangular from east to west, the trenches are vertical and horizontal, and the wall is like a rising dragon, which is magnificent. Daxingshan fort is now a cultural relic protection unit in Huidong County.

Daxingshan ancient fort is located in Daxingshan, a coastal tourist resort in Huidong County. It is a well preserved fort in Pinghai port area. Because the battery is shaped like a pig pocket, it is also called a pig pocket city. Because the fort is located at the top of the mountain, it is also known as the Fort Mountain.

In order to resist foreign aggression, in 1718, Yang Lin, who was then the local military administrator of Guangdong and Guangxi, the right Minister of the Ministry of war and the right deputy censor of the capital, donated money to build it. Daxing mountain is located at the southern end of Renping Peninsula, occupying the position of guarding the Red Bay and Daya Bay. The fort is located on the top of Daxing mountain, about 100 meters above sea level, facing the sea in the East, West and south. The position of the fort is high in the West and low in the East. The east section is long and narrow. The plane of the west section is elliptical. The surrounding walls are built with granite strips, block stones, green bricks, etc. It is 295m in circumference, 3m to 4m in height and 2m to 2.5m in thickness. On the north side, a northeast door is set with granite strips, with a height of 1.95 and a width of 1.63 meters. In 1720, the fort was rebuilt.

historical background

According to the records of Pinghai, a famous historical and cultural city, in 1384, the Ming Dynasty set up 1000 garrisons in Pinghai, which was subordinate to Huizhou garrison. It had 210 100 garrisons, 1120 soldiers, three garrisons, seven garrisons, and the combination of farming and war. In the Qing Dynasty, the defense facilities of Pinghai were further strengthened. From Kangxi to Jiaqing, in addition to strengthening and renovating the city wall, the fortresses of Daxing mountain, Duntou and Jitou were successively built in the frontier of Pinghai City, forming a heavily fortified sea defense line. Stepping into Zhudou city in Daxing mountain, you can also see the magnificent fort built in the Qing Dynasty. The fort is perched on the mountain, overlooking the three coastal defenses. The view of Daxingshan fort is excellent. There is any movement on the sea at the foot. You can have a panoramic view on the fort. Standing on the fort site of Daxing mountain, what you can see is a beautiful scenery: the waves are striking the shore, the seagulls are flying, and the boats are racing.

Stele of Fort

The facilities in the fort have been lost. In the 1960s, two cannons were moved out of the fort. Now one is a County Museum, and the other is a cultural station of Pinghai town. Daxingshan Fort site is an important material for studying the history of Guangdong coastal border defense in Ming and Qing Dynasties. In December 1984, Huidong County Government announced the fort site as a cultural relic protection unit.

"Ding Jian Da Xing Fort stele" the stele was originally placed at the gate of Da Xing Shan fort. The stele is granite, 90 cm high, 48 cm wide and 10 cm thick. The lower part of the monument is divided into two parts.

The name of the stele "Ding Jian Da Xing Fort stele" is placed on the top of the stele, and the seal script is engraved in a horizontal line. There are 9 lines and 146 characters in the text, which are engraved in regular script. The signature is: the story of Ou Jiagong, Guishan County, Huizhou Prefecture On February 16, 1957, Kangxi built Leshi.

The inscription describes the military firepower and personnel arrangement of Daxingshan fort, and states that the fort was built by the governor of Guangdong, Guangxi and other local military affairs, who was also in charge of grain and pay, the right servant of the Ministry of war, who was also the right deputy censor of the duchayuan, and donated 1300 liang of silver. The original stele has been lost, and now only rubbings are left.
