Glacial lake is a kind of lake formed by glacial pits and moraines blocking glacial troughs.

Buchongcuo in eastern Tibet is an ice lake formed by four parallel lateral moraines and two final moraines at the exit.

Glacial lakes are also distributed in the Altay Mountains, Tianshan Mountains and Kunlun Mountains in Xinjiang. Most of them are pre glacial tectonic valleys. During the glacial period, they are strongly eroded by glaciers, forming wide and flat troughs. When the ice retreats, the troughs are blocked by moraines, forming long strip lakes. For example, Tianchi in Xinjiang on the north slope of Bogda mountain, formerly known as yaochi, is said to be the bathing place of queen mother; and Xiaotianchi, it is said It's where the queen washes her feet.

Some glacial lakes are also preserved in Western Sichuan and Changdu.

The lake area has an alpine temperate monsoon climate. The annual average temperature is only 5.5 ℃, and the average temperature in January is - 15 ℃, and the extreme minimum temperature is - 32 ℃. The lake is frozen in late September and thawed in late March of the next year. The freezing period lasts for half a year and the ice thickness is 60 cm.

The lake is surrounded by spruce trees, of which the spruce forests on the moraine of the glacier side in the upper reaches of xinluhai are all over 100 years old, while the spruce forests on the moraine of the glacier end in the lower reaches of xinluhai are up to 580 years old.
