Shangzhen Taoist temple

Shangzhen Taoist temple was founded in the second year of the reign of emperor TAIDING of the Yuan Dynasty (1325) and was raised by Taoist Xiao Yeyun. In the 17th year of Wanli (1589), Yuanhu road was rebuilt by Li Bai. In 1724, Taoist Jiang Yunshan added Doumu pavilion to the East. Xianfeng three years (1853), destroyed by war. It was rebuilt in 1867. The town was named "Daoyuan town" because of the temple. In August 1993, with the approval of Fengxian County People's government, Fengxian Shangzhen Taoist temple was restored and opened to the outside world. Sanqing hall was built in 1996, Doumu hall was completed in 1997, Tianshi hall was completed in 1998, and the temple of wealth was built in 2001. The Taoist temple worships the statues of Sanqing, Doumu, 60jiazi, God of wealth, immortal Cihang, Tianshi Zhang, Chenghuang, Xianggong Shi and master Yang.

Hall layout

Shangzhen Taoist temple covers an area of about 3300 square meters, surrounded by water on three sides, Qingshui River in the East, Xiaoheng River in the South and Zhanggang in the north. There is Jinlan bridge on Qingshui River, connecting the East and West long street of Daoyuan ancient town. With a construction area of 1551 square meters, there are three temples and three main halls. Entering the first Hall of the main gate, it is mainly for Taoist thousand handed Avalokitesvara.

The first Hall

The second hall is "Doumu hall", mainly for Doumu Yuanjun. "Dou" refers to the Big Dipper stars, "Mu" refers to the mother. According to the Taoist Scripture, Doumu is "the mother of the stars in Beidou". The ninth day of the ninth lunar month is the Christmas of doulao Yuanjun. If the believers worship douzhen, they can relieve the disaster and prolong their life.

Doum Hall

The third hall is "Sanqing hall", which is mainly for Sanqing worshiping gods. Sanqing, the three supreme gods of Taoism, is generally known as "nihilistic nature, Sanqing, Sanjing, Sanbao, Tianzun". It refers to the three beautiful places of Yuqing, Shangqing and Taiqing respected by Taoism. It also refers to the three gods living in the beautiful places of Sanqing, namely: the supreme enlightened Yuanshi Tianzun in the holy place of Yuqing, the Lingbao Tianzun in the true place of Shangqing, and the moral Tianzun in the fairyland of Taiqing.

Sanqing Hall

There is a "God of wealth hall" on the west side of the Taoist temple, which is mainly for Marshal Zhao Gongming. Taoism respects him as the God of wealth and takes charge of the sources of wealth in the world. Marshal Zhao holds a treasure in his hand, which means that everyone can get wealth in the world. He holds a silver whip in his hand, which means that he will be punished by heaven if he gets it.

Hall of God of wealth

There is also a "Yuanchen hall" on the west side of the Taoist temple, which is mainly for sixty Jiazi gods. In ancient China, the circulation of heavenly stems and Earthly Branches matched each other. From Jiazi to Guihai, sixty was regarded as a week, so it was also called sixty Jiazi. Later, Taoism used sixty Jiazi to match with the name of God, thus forming the belief of Taoist Yuanchen. Because sixty Jiazi is a star God, it is also called Taisui God.

Yuanchen Hall

Shangzhen Taoist temple holds a three-day traditional temple fair on the occasion of the Mid Autumn Festival on August 15 every year. During the temple fair, colorful flags are flying, gongs and drums are blaring in the sky, pilgrims are filling the door, and the sound of Taoist music is a lively scene. The Mid Autumn Festival temple fair of Shangzhen Taoist temple originated in the Ming Dynasty and is well-known in Southern Shanghai. It was rated as the intangible cultural heritage of Fengxian District in 2016.
