Shangli reservoir

Shangli reservoir is located at no.866, Longhushan Road, Siming District, Xiamen City, Fujian Province, on the east side of wenzeng road in the south of Xiamen Island, surrounded by Yuping mountain (xiguling), Dongping mountain and huangcuoling in the north, adjacent to Xiamen botanical garden. It is an important part of Gulangyu wanshishan national key scenic area.

Shangli reservoir, built in 1924, is one of the oldest reservoirs in Xiamen Island. The completion of the reservoir solved the problem of drinking water for Xiamen citizens at that time.

On April 12, 2019, it was selected as the "second batch of China's industrial heritage protection list" sponsored by the Publicity Department of China Association for science and technology and co sponsored by the Innovation Strategy Research Institute of China Association for science and technology and China Society of urban planning.

History of reservoir

Xiamen Island is an island short of fresh water. The source of drinking water only depends on the stored rainwater and well water, as well as the "chuanzai water" that the water peddlers take from Jiulongjiang fresh water district of Haicheng county every day. Then the water peddlers in the city buy water from the water peddlers and then sell it to every household in every street. Around the 1920s, more than 10000 tons of water were sold every day. These edible water has not been disinfected and filtered, and after many times of transport, there are health problems.

In 1920, Huang Yizhu, an overseas Chinese industrialist, initiated the initiative of organizing Xiamen water supply company.

In 1921, Huang Yizhu discussed with Hong Hongru, President of Xiamen chamber of Commerce, Chen Shifu, manager of Xiamen Branch of Bank of China, ye Fuguang, comprador of HSBC, and several overseas Chinese who were responsible for the business.

In May 1923, Huang Shijin, a national industrialist in Xiamen, and Huang Yizhu, an overseas Chinese industrialist, jointly founded Xiamen water supply company. The company was approved by the Ministry of agriculture and Commerce of Beijing government at that time and named as "commercial Xiamen water supply Co., Ltd.". The initial capital is 1 million yuan, and Huang Yizhu shares 400000 yuan.

In 1925, the water reservoir, filter tank, water tower and other construction projects of the company were invited for bidding in Shanghai, and the construction was won by Siemens of Germany with 920000 yuan.

In July 1926, the first phase of Shangli reservoir project was completed and began to supply water to Xiamen city.

In 1927, the whole project was completed, and the maximum water demand of the reservoir was 1.272 million cubic meters, which could be used by more than 200000 residents in the city for nine months.

Reasons for selection: Shangli reservoir is the earliest reservoir in Xiamen; it is the earliest urban water supply facility in Southeast China, and its water quality has been rated as the second in the world and the first in East Asia by foreign experts; it is the first dam construction project in Xiamen to introduce foreign technology. Masonry dam is the first arch dam in modern China, designed and built by Siemens company of Germany.
