Jingyunli

Jingyunli

Built in 1924, jingyunli is a common Shikumen in Shanghai, with only three rows of three storey buildings facing south. In the 1920s and 1930s, a large number of celebrities such as Lu Xun, Chen Wangdao, Mao Dun, Ye Shengtao, Feng Xuefeng, ZHOU Jianren and Roushi lived here. They were engaged in writing, editing, leading and organizing revolutionary literature activities. They are known as historical and cultural celebrities.

The address of jingyunli is Lane 35, HENGBANG Road, Hongkou District. The word "jingyunli" in lane 35 is still clearly visible, and No. 23, jingyunli, where Lu Xun once lived, is just like that.

On October 8, 1927, Lu Xun and Xu Guangping moved to jingyunli from Gonghe hotel near today's Bund. At that time, Hengbang road was still in Zhabei District, and jingyunli was a new Lane on Hengbang road. It connected Baoshan Road in the West and Duolun Road in the East (formerly known as doule'an Road). There were three rows of three storey buildings with brick and wood structure facing south in the lane.

In 2005, the house should be even newer than what aunt Xu saw. However, Lu Xun did not only value this point. He had just moved from Guangzhou to Shanghai at that time. He was more concerned about his neighbors. It turned out that Lu Xun's third brother, ZHOU Jianren, also lived in Jingyun at that time, and ZHOU Jianren also told Lu Xun that his neighbors were Ye Shengtao and Mao Dun. With so many acquaintances, it's no wonder that Lu Xun soon decided to move here. Lu Xun just arrived in Shanghai on October 3, and moved to jingyunli five days later. He lived in jingyunli for more than two years.

In jingyunli's small Shikumen, Lu Xun swept away the kitsch of the literary world on the sea with a "golden brush"; Rou Shi, a hot-blooded young man, also produced February, which was praised by Lu Xun as a masterpiece of early Chinese realism; and it was here that the left-wing writers' League of China, which is famous for its history, was brewed.
