Yanzhijing

Yanzhijing is located in Jiming temple, Hunan side of Xuanwu, Xuanwu District, Nanjing. It is the well of Chen Jingyang hall in the Southern Dynasties, also known as disgrace well and Jingyang well.

In the third year of Chen Zhenming (589) of the Southern Dynasty, Sui soldiers went south to cross the river and occupied Taicheng. Empress Chen, hearing of the arrival of soldiers, joined his concubines Zhang Lihua and Kong guipin in this well. At night, it was held by Sui soldiers, and later generations called this well humiliating. After Sui and Tang Dynasties, Taicheng was repeatedly destroyed, Jingyang hall was destroyed, and Jingyang well was also annihilated. In order to learn the lesson of empress Chen's subjugation, the descendants set up a well in Jiming Temple of Jilong mountain.

Historical evolution

According to the records of JINGDING Jiankang annals and Zhizheng Jinling new Annals, yanzhijing, formerly known as Jingyang well, is located in Taicheng. Taicheng is the palace city of the Six Dynasties. It is generally located around the Daxing palace in Xuanwu District of Nanjing and the East-West line of the presidential palace in Nanjing to the north.

After the Sui Dynasty, the Taicheng city was repeatedly destroyed. The Jingyang building was destroyed early, and the yanzhijing well was annihilated. However, the well fence is still there, which is called chengongjing. It once spread in Xingning temple and Jinling magic temple in Jiangning. In order to memorize the lesson of empress Chen's subjugation, later generations set up a well beside Jiming temple in Jilong mountain and engraved a humiliating well inscription.

In the Song Dynasty, yanzhijing stone fence was in the Fabao Temple (now Jiming Temple) (Su Yi Jian said it was in the bachelor's College), and the red mark was like rouge.

In Ming Dynasty, yanzhijing was on the left side of Tianwang hall. Later, it is said that the original Jinglan was preserved in the cultural relics preservation Office of the Ming Palace Museum.

During the reign of Daoguang in the Qing Dynasty, Tuo Ying, the abbot of Jiming temple, found it according to the annals and set up a fence to protect it, which was named "ancient yanzhijing".

During the period of the Republic of China, beside the yanzhijing, there was a yanzhiting pavilion with a hexagonal, painted area of 49 square meters. Ma Chaojun, the mayor of Nanjing, wrote the word "ancient yanzhijing". The "ancient Rouge well" on the hillside at the east foot of Jiming temple comes from this. There is a stele standing in front of the well, on which the four big characters of "ancient yanzhijing" can be seen clearly.

The origin of the name

During the Liu and Song Dynasties, a large-scale construction project was carried out at the foot of Jilong mountain in Nanjing. There were Jingyang building, Jingyang hall, Jingyang well and so on.

In the third year of Chen Zhenming (589) of the Southern Dynasty, Chen Shubao, the later leader, indulged in wine and sex, ignored the government and loved his concubines Zhang Lihua and Kong Guifei. When the Sui army came, empress Chen took one person out of the Jingyang hall and went to the Jingyang well to hide in the dry well. After the Sui army entered Taicheng, they searched all the imperial palaces and finally hanged them from the dry well in Jingyang. The second imperial concubine was killed, the empress Chen was captured, the palace was burned, and the country was destroyed. The stone well fence was covered with rouge marks, so it was named Rouge well. In order to learn from the lessons of the Chen Dynasty, it is also called humiliating well.
