Development history

Xitang is the hometown of Chinese buttons. Shell button is the first generation of professional button in China. It is located in the water town of Hangzhou Jiahu plain. Xitang shell material is very rich. In the past, the button on the shirt was made of clam shell, which is rich in Jiangnan. The button on the shirt had to be cut, polished, punched, bleached and reshaped. At that time, most of the button production machines were operated by human foot, which was completely manual. It was a kind of pure manual labor. Xuezhai of button museum was built in 1926. It is said that xueyoumin was the builder of xuezhai. After he bought this "huoshaobaichang", xuezhai was built. It is a structure of front shop and back house, covering an area of about 350 square meters. It is only about 30 meters from the front street to the back river. It is obviously impossible to build a deep mansion in such a small place like the traditional style of the Ming and Qing Dynasties. Therefore, Xue's house has only two entrances. The first entrance is along the street. The storefront is three in the East and one in the West. Now the three in the East are doors. There are special counters for tourist souvenirs and antiques on the left and right sides. Like the ground floor, the roof of the upper floor is herringbone, but it is higher and more comfortable than ordinary dwellings. The second entrance is the main hall, between which there is a patio and a wall door, which is also built according to the traditional structure. The patio is very small, and the wing rooms on the left and right sides are also very narrow, just like the corridor, but they are equipped with long glass windows, so the lighting is relatively bright. The main hall is composed of three couplets, with "Chongji hall" on it. According to the traditional hall layout, there is a long gate in the back half. Beyond the threshold is the city river yangxiujing, and there is a river port for boat passengers to get on and off. On the right side of the main hall are staircases and kitchens, which are very compact in structure. Due to the influence of the new culture, Xue's house has three characteristics compared with the traditional buildings. The first is that the building is compact. Because it is located between the West Street and the city river, limited by the site, the building has only two entrances, but the connection between the two entrances is compact. In addition, the two carriages look down from a high place, showing a zigzag Zoumalou style building. Second, the structure is simple. There is no fancy decoration in the details of the whole building, no accompaniment, no carved beams and painted buildings, which is very simple. Third, the hall is bright. Because all the windows in the main hall are equipped with glass, the windows are decorated with simple flower shaped bars, which looks simple and bright. Therefore, it is said that Xue's house is the representative of the transformation of Jiangnan traditional dwellings to modern architecture.
