Nanjing University of information engineering, formerly known as Nanjing Institute of meteorology as the "cradle of meteorological talents in China", was founded in 1960. It was identified as a national key university in 1978 and renamed Nanjing University of Information Engineering in 2004. It is a national key university jointly built by China Meteorological Administration and Jiangsu Provincial people's government. It is a key construction university in Jiangsu Province. It has a number of basic and professional laboratories, among which 13 laboratories, including atmospheric science experimental teaching center, environmental science and engineering experimental teaching center and Automation Experimental Teaching Center, are the experimental teaching demonstration center of Jiangsu Province. The library has a collection of more than 1.51 million volumes of paper literature, 35 large-scale network databases in Chinese and foreign languages, 1.37 million kinds of Chinese and foreign e-books, 19000 kinds of electronic journals, and an annual subscription of about 1800 kinds of paper Chinese and foreign journals. It is the university library with the most complete literature of Atmospheric Science in China.

The school has set up the WMO regional training center, which has trained more than 1400 middle and senior meteorological scientific and technological personnel and managers for 129 countries and regions, and successfully hosted the 10th WMO education and training conference and the Third International Conference on quantitative precipitation estimation and forecast. In 2010, the 62nd session of the Executive Council of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) issued a certificate in recognition of the school's important contribution to the international meteorological training.
