Beijing University of science and technology was founded in 1952 by some departments of five famous universities in China, including Beiyang University. It was formerly known as Beijing Institute of iron and steel. Now it has developed into a national key university directly under the Ministry of education, which is based on engineering and coordinated development of engineering, arts, management, science, economics, law and other disciplines. It is one of the first batch of institutions of higher learning to officially establish graduate schools in China. In May 1997, the University was one of the first batch to enter the ranks of "211 Project" universities.
