Huaihai opera is one of the main local operas in Jiangsu Province. It is popular in Lianyungang City, Huai'an City, Suqian City and some counties of Xuzhou City and Yancheng City. It has a history of more than 200 years. Huaihai opera troupes appeared around 1830. After 1880, there were more than 100 Huaihai troupes in Donghai and Guanyun counties of Haizhou. During the Anti Japanese war in 1940, Huaihai opera artists established the "National Salvation Association of artists" and produced a large number of modern plays, such as "little bench", "rear area", "three stars falling", etc. they used operas to publicize the Anti Japanese War, which played a role in boosting the morale of the people.

The singing music of Huaihai opera is rich and colorful, with the difference between male and female. The male tune takes "dongfangdiao" as the basic tune and "jinfengdiao" as the auxiliary tune; the female tune takes "haofengguang" as the basic tune and "erfanzi" as the auxiliary tune. The characteristic of Huaihai opera's singing is that the end of the sentence suddenly turns up eight degrees to play the tune, which has the artistic charm of soul pulling, so it is called "soul pulling tune". Some performances of Huaihai opera are obviously born out of rural life in Northern Jiangsu, with strong local flavor. In the long-term performance, Huaihai opera has accumulated a number of classic traditional operas, such as "32 volumes, 64 single Productions". Among them, PI Xiuying Sigao, San Baitang and urge to rent are well-known in Northern Jiangsu.
