Architectural painting is a rather broad term. One layer of its meaning is the same as people's common understanding. It refers to the use of color, paint, paint and other raw materials to depict the image on the plane of the building wall; the other layer of meaning refers to the use of soil, stone, wood, cloth, paper, pottery and other materials to decorate the building and its internal furnishings. Based on the geographical and folk reasons, there are very obvious differences in the overall style and detail treatment of architectural color painting in different regions and nationalities in China. Xiangyuan Kang Wai painting is a kind of folk painting art popular in Xiangyuan county and adjacent counties in Shanxi Province. It appeared in Xiangyuan area at the latest in the Yuan Dynasty. Different from Kangwei painting in other areas, Xiangyuan Kangwei painting integrates poetry, calligraphy, painting and printing, forming a kind of "full set" combined folk art form.
Xiangyuan Kang Wai painting was originally a kind of practical decorative art created by local people to prevent the clothes and bedding from being dirty due to the falling off of Kang Wai wall. It mostly imitates the expression of murals, and the painting style has the flavor of architectural painting. On the whole, it is divided into four parts: the center Kang Wai, the back, the strip screen and the ground Wai. The center Kang Wai can also be divided into small parts such as the side road, the lace, the pool and the heart.
In Xiangyuan, Kangwei painting is divided into three parts: upper, middle and lower. First class Kang Wai painting can be divided into "single storey building" and "upstairs". It is mainly used for wedding, with excellent production and fine workmanship. Medium Kang Wai painting is also quite particular, generally suitable for middle-aged and elderly people. The design of lower Kang Wai painting is simple and generous, which is widely used in daily life. There are many kinds of Kang Wai paintings in Xiangyuan, which have bright colors and prominent themes. It is rich in content, the theme involves people, scenery, flowers and birds, auspicious animals, calligraphy, patterns and many other aspects, the performance of the use of symbolic metaphors, lucky and auspicious patterns to convey exorcism, blessing, peace and happiness. Xiangyuan Kang Wai painting is a comprehensive product of the local people's practical needs and spiritual pursuit. It vividly reflects the aesthetic consciousness and values from the people, and has the research value of sociology and folklore.
