Tianshui City, Gansu Province has a long history of lacquer carving, with a history of more than 1000 years. In the years of Tongzhi and Guangxu in the Qing Dynasty, Tianshui lacquer carving developed the painting technique of carving and filling, which became a typical example of the traditional painting technique in Northwest China and has a history of more than 100 years.

Tianshui lacquer carving technique is based on the application of local raw lacquer on the surface of pine, birch, basswood and other objects. After several times of painting, it is made into lacquer mould, polished smooth, then carved and filled with color, and then inlaid with various decorative materials such as beautiful stone, shell and so on. The finished product is simple and beautiful in shape, exquisite in design, smooth in color, and has the characteristics of acid and alkali resistance, high temperature resistance, moisture resistance and decay resistance.

Tianshui lacquer carving skill is mainly hand-made, which is handed down by oral and psychological teaching. In recent years, with the change of people's way of life, the sales volume of Tianshui carved lacquer products has been greatly reduced, and the production has been shrinking day by day. The former carved lacquer factories have gone bankrupt and restructured one after another. Some inheritors have died, some have changed careers, and the old painting skills such as covering lacquer and leather tire have been lost. In the face of this grim situation, it is necessary to formulate protective measures as soon as possible to rescue this ancient folk handicraft.
