The terrain of Jiyuan City is high in the north and low in the south. In the north is Taihang Mountains with towering peaks and cliffs. The main peak, Tiantan mountain, is known as the top of the mountains in Northern Henan, with an altitude of 1711 meters. In summer, it is hot, with sufficient heat and concentrated rainfall, and local areas are prone to waterlogging and drought. In autumn, the air is crisp, the temperature drops greatly, and the rainfall decreases. It's cold in winter with little rain and snow. The annual average temperature is 14.5 ℃, the annual average rainfall is 567.9 mm, and the annual average relative humidity is 68%.

There are 50 kinds of minerals in Jiyuan City, 14 kinds of mineral resources have been identified, and 8 kinds of minerals have been developed and utilized, including 2 kinds of metal minerals, 5 kinds of non-metal minerals and 1 kind of energy minerals.
The vegetation of Jiyuan City is temperate deciduous broad-leaved forest zone, most of which belong to coniferous and broad-leaved mixed forest. In Taihang mountain area, deciduous oak trees are planted. In the west, except for a small part of virgin forest near Aobei mountain, the rest are mainly mixed forest of secondary oak forest. In the eastern limestone area, there are a small amount of pine and Berlin, and the rest are mainly mixed forest and shrub. The forest coverage rate reaches 48%. In the western shallow mountain area, there are two-year and three crop cultivation vegetation mainly composed of wheat grains. There are few forests and many barren hills and slopes in this area, except for a small number of secondary oak forests near the yanwa river.
The rest of the mountain peaks are mostly artificial Robinia pseudoacacia forest, with shrubs such as Manihot thorn, Vitex negundo and Zizyphus jujuba growing on the top of the hillsides and hills, with the forest coverage rate of 20%. The southeast loess hills and piedmont inclined plain are mainly cultivated vegetation with two crops a year, and the hilly area is mostly cultivated as farmland, with the forest coverage rate of 14%. The city's woodland area is 813600 mu, including 440300 mu of natural forest and 373300 mu of artificial forest. By the end of 2014, the city had 590700 mu of national key public welfare forest compensation area, 2 National Nature Reserves with an area of 574000 mu, and 1 forest park with a forest coverage rate of 44.39%.
There are 197 families and 1760 species of higher plants in Jiyuan City, including 34 families and 76 species of bryophytes. There are 87 species in 20 families of pteridophytes. There are 12 species of gymnosperms in 4 families. There are 1585 species in 139 families of angiosperms.
There are 34 species of mammals, accounting for 47% of the total number of mammals, and more than 140 species of birds, accounting for 46% of the total number. There are 8 species of amphibians, accounting for 42% of the total; 19 species of reptiles, accounting for 51% of the total; 30 species of molluscs, 485 species of insects. There are 33 species of wildlife under state key protection.
There are national first-class protected animals: leopard, forest musk deer, white stork, black stork, Golden Eagle, jade belt sea eagle, great bustard. National second level protected animals: Macaca mulatta, otter, gazelle, spotted bill pelican, swan, cygnet, vulture, kite, big owl, grey crane, spoon chicken, white tailed Harrier, sparrow hawk, goshawk, songque hawk, red footed falcon, yellow clawed falcon, red hawk, red footed owl, collared owl, carved owl, longitudinal bellied owl, long eared owl, short eared owl, small reed owl and giant salamander. One of the first-class protected plants in China is the Millennium ginkgo biloba in Wangwu mountain of Taihang.

There are 24 ethnic groups in Jiyuan City, of which the Han nationality accounts for about 98.5% of the total population, and other ethnic minorities account for about 1.5% of the total population. The Hui nationality is the main ethnic group, accounting for 90% of the minority population.
