Perennial herb, 60-90cm high, fragrant, densely covered with short or yellowish glandular hairs. The base of stem is lignified and the nodes are enlarged. Leaves alternate, broadly cordate or suborbicular, nearly palmately 5-7-lobed, lobes subdivided into narrow lobes, margin hairy, with unequal notches, both sides densely hairy; petiole 4-6 cm long; stipules flat and broad, often falling off. Umbels opposite leaves with small flowers; bracts 4, ovate or broadly ovate: sepals 5; petals 5, rose red or pink, purple veined, two larger upper petals; stamens 10, without glands; pistils 1, ovary 5-locular, style 5. The capsule is 5-lobed and curls upward from the beak at maturity. The flowering period is between spring and summer.
