[plant morphology] water hemp

Deciduous shrub, up to 1-2 m high. Branchlets Burmese, grayish brown, densely appressed pubescent. Leaves lanceolate or narrowly lanceolate, 6-16 cm long, 2-3 mm wide, base rounded or cuneate, apex acuminate, margin serrate, upper rough, rugose, lower densely covered with white hairs, basal 3 veins, lateral veins 5-6 pairs; petiole 3-6 mm long, hairy; stipules ovate lanceolate, longer than petiole. The flowers are unisexual, male perianth 4-lobed, stamen 4-lobed, bracts longer than sepals; female perianth 4-lobed, connate. Achenes numerous, globose, perianth fleshy, orange yellow, 7 mm in diam. The flowering period is June. The fruit period is from August to October.

Born in the edge of stream or forest margin. It is distributed in Guangxi, Yunnan, Guizhou, Sichuan, Hubei, Hunan and Taiwan.
