Xiaochang drum dance is a traditional folk dance of "Guoshan Yao", a branch of Yao nationality. It is popular in Lianshan Zhuang Yao Autonomous County, Guangdong Province. With the accompaniment of Suona, the dancers hold a long drum and dance while beating. Because of its small drum shape, it is different from the "Long Drum Dance" of Paiyao, another branch of Yao nationality.
Xiaochang dance is known as "seventy-two routines", mainly including "gaixinfang dance" and "Zao dance".
The dance of building a new house shows the whole process of building a new house, such as "looking for the house", "digging the house", "chopping the wood" and "lifting the beam".
There are 12 basic movements of drum making: looking for drum wood, chopping drum wood, measuring drum wood, erecting horse, sawing drum wood, planing drum wood, digging drum heart (also known as "drilling heaven and earth"), fighting drum wood, repairing drum wood, listening to drum, sealing drum, thanking ceremony, etc.
Changgu is an important symbol of Yao culture. Xiaochang drum dance is the most representative traditional dance of Guoshan Yao. It is an important part of Yao people's holding "huanpan King's wish" to sacrifice their ancestors to pan king. It has been handed down from generation to generation for thousands of years and has been prosperous for a long time.
