In the book of changes, there is a saying that "the dance of drum is to do its best", which not only vividly reflects the long history of Chinese encouragement, but also outlines its main functions. From the original "beating the stone, supporting the stone and leading a hundred animals to dance" to the later generations, the Chinese drum dance has always been in the same continuous line. There are various forms of Chinese drum dance, which are widely distributed. There are many kinds of dances. Among them, the more typical forms are waist drum dance, broken drum dance, flower drum dance, wood drum dance, long drum dance, flat drum dance, copper drum dance, dragon drum dance, fan drum dance, yellow mud drum dance, elephant foot dance, monkey drum dance, flower whip dance, bamboo drum dance, Bell Dance, sheep skin dance and so on.
Bagua dance is the only square dance belonging to Taoist culture in Shandong Province. It is mainly spread in Miaohou town at the junction of Qixia and Fushan in Shandong Province. Now only the Linjia village in Miaohou town has descendants. According to historical records, Qixia's Taoism activities have been very frequent since the Yuan Dynasty. At the peak of Chongyang palace, there were hundreds of Taoists with a great momentum. The traditional Taoist ritual of fasting and Jiao needs the cooperation of drum music, and the eight trigrams' encouragement is the result. Qixia's unique geographical form and cultural foundation have created the Bagua dance which is closely related to Taoist culture. This folk dance is integrated with traditional martial arts, aiming at ancestor worship, blessing and avoiding evil spirits. It reflects farmers' ideal and desire to pray for good weather.
Bagua dance is performed in the form of men's and women's dance. In the performance, footwork, gesture and formation all require eight characters, showing the characteristics of light, floating, squatting and turning. The dance team is generally composed of eight men and eight women. The male members carry the Bagua drum in front of their waist, hold the drum with their left hand, hold the drumstick with their right hand, and the female members hold the round copper umbrella with flat top in both hands. The whole performance is dominated by drums, supplemented by umbrellas, and complemented by drums and umbrellas. The formation of eight trigrams is relatively simple, and there are often "eight streets", "Double Dragons spitting beard", "single string of flowers" and "turn" in the circle.
Bagua dance is a treasure of Shandong folk dance, and also a wonderful work of Chinese Taoist art. In recent years, with the change of the environment, it is on the verge of being lost and in urgent need of rescue and protection.
