Tajik folk song is an important heritage of Tajik traditional music. From music to lyrics, it has the characteristics of Pamirs Plateau and national characteristics. It is an important part of Tajik culture and has a long history. In ancient times, along with the religious culture of Tajik people, Tajik folk songs faithfully recorded the development history of Tajik people. Tajik folk songs are mainly spread in Tashkurgan Tajik Autonomous County and surrounding plateau areas. The Tajik people are mainly engaged in farming and animal husbandry. They are good at singing and dancing. Folk songs have become an integral part of their life.
The content of Tajik folk songs is very extensive. The popular folk songs today mainly reflect the ancient social life, ethics, solidarity, helping others, folk customs, eulogizing love and religious activities. When young men and women talk about love, they also take the form of "roubayi" (four sentences in a couplet or duet) to sing to each other to express their love and missing. Its types mainly include: folk songs, love songs, narrative poems, elegy, religious songs and humorous songs.
Tajik folk songs maintain a simple and unique style. From the perspective of genre and function, Tajik folk songs include some folk songs accompanied by dance. Therefore, the melody of Tajik folk songs varies, including various kinds of fast and slow folk songs. Tajiks sing folk songs in accordance with the different contents and tunes of folk songs. After festivals, weddings and labor, they gather together and accompany them with hawk flute, tambourine and rewave. Folk singers sing with emotion and the masses dance. Tajik folk songs are mainly inherited from generation to generation in the form of family inheritance and apprenticeship.
Tajik folk songs have distinctive national characteristics, which are of great value to the study of ethnic minority folk songs and Musicology in China. With the spread of modern popular songs, the young generation has gradually forgotten the old Tajik folk songs. Nowadays, the singers who can sing traditional folk songs are all over 55 years old, and few of them can really sing all kinds of folk songs. They are too old and have no successors, so they are in danger.
