Introduction to the art of gongs and drums (Xiaohe gongs and drums)

Applicant: Yubei District, Chongqing

Xiaohe Gong and drum is a kind of folk percussion music composed of Suona, Daguo, Geng Gong, Xiaobo, Ma Gong, basin drum and other musical instruments.

The history of Xiaohe gongs and drums can be traced back to the late Ming Dynasty and the early Qing Dynasty. It is said that in 1647, the Wangs, who lived under the surnames of Jiang and Tang, built dawanchang at the confluence of the two rivers. They invited three folk percussion troupes from the local Jiang, Tang and Luo families to gather together to celebrate in turn, hence the name of Xiaohe gongs and drums.

Local music classes all follow the inheritance pedigree. Starting from the genealogy records of Jiang's "family Wozi music class", they are inherited from generation to generation by "gongchi music" and "lingdangdiao".

Xiaohe's performance of gongs and drums can be roughly divided into wedding music and funeral music. The wedding class is divided into two forms: sitting in the hall and walking. "Sitting in the hall" means that when a wedding is held, the band will choose the music to perform. "Walking" refers to blowing "morning sedan chair" in person, blowing "Niang songnv" and "Songmei" in sedan chair according to the wedding custom. Funeral music class is divided into "blowing sitting hall" and "funeral". "Blowing Zuotang" is mainly composed of Chengtang Qupai and a single sad Qupai to increase the funeral atmosphere. "Funerals" are performed in the wild, singing and drumming together to show solemnity, so they are often used in "jiachujiada" repertoire.

Xiaohe has a variety of gongs and drums, various playing forms, superb blowing and percussion techniques, skillful collocation of various musical instruments, alternating complex rhythms, showing a specific mood, or excited, happy or sad, giving people the feeling of folk drum music beauty.
