Women's clothing in Luzhi, Suzhou
Applicant: Suzhou City, Jiangsu Province
Rural women living in Luzhi, Shengpu, Weiting and Lumu, Wuxian County, east of Suzhou, have always kept their traditional folk costumes. Their traditional costumes, which are characterized by combing their heads, wrapping their headscarves, wearing stitched shirts, matching crotch pants, Cambodian skirts, wrapping their arms and embroidered shoes, are quite characteristic of the water town in the south of the Yangtze River, and have won the title of "ethnic minority" in Suzhou.
Water women attach great importance to the carding and decoration of their hair. In addition to their black hair, huge hair and numerous ornaments, they are supplemented by exquisite headbands and costumes, showing their dexterity and elegance. The local characteristics of their costumes are very strong, and their inheritance is quite stable. However, with the change of seasons, the difference of age and the need of etiquette, their costumes will also have obvious differences. Generally speaking, the characteristics of spring and autumn clothing are the most prominent. In spring and autumn, the women's clothes in Shuixiang are mainly made of stitched shirts. The fabrics are mostly made of calico, homespun cloth, light and dark Shilin cloth, etc. the color contrast is bright, fresh but not gaudy, gaudy but not vulgar. The clothes made of several kinds of color fabrics are appropriately cut, finely sewn and highly decorative. The stitching, hemming, niupan, belt decoration, embroidery and other decorative processes show the style characteristics of the clothes. The pants are mostly made of blue and white calico or white blue calico, and the crotch is spliced with blue or black Shirley. At first, due to the limitation of cloth, these costumes were spliced to save materials, and then developed from the actual needs to the subjective consciousness, paying attention to the formal beauty of tidiness, balance and symmetry. The waist skirt is also very distinctive. The length is knee length. The skirt is very thin. There are different decorations on the top and the skirt. A small waist is tied on the outside of the skirt to connect with the skirt. A big pocket is sewn on the waist, and various patterns are embroidered around and on the belt. It is an important decoration in clothing.
Women's clothing in Shuixiang has a long history, which has been handed down from generation to generation. It is suitable for the needs of women in water villages to engage in productive labor and has high practical value. This kind of dress also reflects the traditional aesthetic concept of the water area.
