The painting technique of Fuzhou bodiless lacquerware was founded by Shen Shaoan on the basis of inheriting Chinese painting technique for thousands of years. Shen's bodiless lacquer art has distinct technical characteristics in bodiless molding and surface painting. It is made of cloth or wood. After the processes of plastering, polishing, painting, black polishing, color polishing and so on, it is decorated with the techniques of colored lacquer haloing gold, brocade pattern, red lacquer depicting gold and inlaid mother of pearl. Since 1898, Fuzhou bodiless lacquerware has won prizes at World Expositions in Paris, Toronto, Berlin, London and Philadelphia for its excellent craftsmanship, variety, ingenious modeling and gorgeous colors. In 1905, the Qing government awarded Shen Zhenghao, the fifth generation grandson of Shen Shao'an, the "fourth class Shang Xun, five grade Ding Dai". In 1910, Shen Zhenghao and Shen Zhengxun were promoted to "first class Shang Xun, four grade Ding Dai". After 1949, Shen's Lanji lacquerware shop was transformed into a bodiless lacquerware company. Famous lacquerware artists Li Zhiqing and Gao Xiuquan made new breakthroughs in design and lacquering art. Their works won the first prize of national lacquer modeling design and were used as main decorations for Fujian hall and Taiwan Hall of the Great Hall of the people.

At present, due to the impact of the market economy, Fuzhou No.1 and No.2 bodiless lacquerware factories have closed down one after another. Fujian Institute of Arts and crafts has been dissolved, and the employees have changed their professions. There are few original artists left.
