Dragon boat race is a traditional recreational sport with the participation of many nationalities in Tongren. Tongren is a multi-ethnic area, inhabited by Miao, Tujia, Dong, Gelao, man and other ethnic minorities. Tongren is prosperous because of water. It is located in the middle of Wuling mountains. It goes down Dongting and into the Yangtze River by Jinjiang River. In ancient times, it was the only way out of the mountains. It was known as the "gateway of eastern Guizhou". Since ancient times, the dragon boat race, which symbolizes the spirit of unity and the will to compete, is the most distinctive folk custom in Tongren.

In April and may every year, when the weather gets warmer, the villagers in each village will put tung oil on the Dragon Boat "oil" which has been shelved for a year, draw "dragon pattern", install the dragon head, and go into the water to practice. When it comes to the Dragon Boat Festival, they gather in Tongyan, the confluence of Shuangjiang River in the south of the city, to wait for the competition. At that time, the whole city of Tongren was full of people. Men, women, old and young of all ethnic groups gathered on both sides of Jinjiang River to watch the dragon boat race. A wooden Dragon Boat shuttled on the Jinjiang River, competing for the first place. The sound of firecrackers, shouts and refuels came one after another. There was a lot of activity on the shore. It presents a joyful scene that this hot land uses water as the medium, people and water blend, and nationalities blend.

Dragon Boat Race in Tongren not only has a long history and a broad mass base, but also forms a harmonious and peaceful dragon boat culture through a series of traditional customs such as dragon boat sacrifice, dragon eye lighting, dragon boat launching, dragon boat competition, duck snatching and fishing.
