Brief introduction of shadow play (Gaizhou shadow play)
Applicant: Gaizhou City, Liaoning Province
Gaizhou shadow play, also known as "southern Liaoning shadow play", is popular in Xiuyan, Haicheng, Dashiqiao, Wafangdian, Zhuanghe and other places in Gaizhou area of Liaoning Province. It originated in the late Ming and early Qing Dynasty, and reached perfection in the late Qing and early Republic of China. Gaizhou artists use donkey skin as raw material, scrape it thin to the degree of transparency, and use it to carve figures to make exquisite and unique shadow puppet images.
The singing of Gaizhou shadow play is euphemistic and pleasant, which obviously has the flavor of southern Liaoning folk songs. The singing format is standard, and the style is natural and fluent. The singing and reciting use the local folk language of Gaizhou, showing a humorous style. The accompaniment band is full of martial arts field, and the main instrument is the local self created Wutong four Hu. Gaizhou shadow play's roles include Sheng, Dan, Jing, Xu and Chou. Its performance is lively and full of local characteristics.
Gaizhou shadow play contains a lot of historical and cultural information. Its unique modeling technology and original southern Liaoning folk singing music are of great value in the study of folk art.
