History of Lugou Bridge
Main data: see Lugou Bridge Lugou bridge was built in June of the 29th year of jindading (AD 1189) and completed in March of the third year of Mingchang (AD 1192). It has a total length of 266.5m and a width of 7.5m. It has 11 culvert holes. There are 140 watchposts on each side of the stone guardrail. There are stone lions carved on the heads of the pillars in different shapes. According to the records, there are 627 original ones and 501 existing ones. The stone lions are mostly from the Ming and Qing Dynasties, but there are also a few remains of the Jin and Yuan Dynasties. It has been listed as one of the eight scenic spots in Yanjing since the reign of Jin Zhangzong. In 1444, the bridge was rebuilt. During the reign of Emperor Kangxi of Qing Dynasty, the Yongding River was flooded and the bridge was damaged. It was rebuilt in 1698. Kangxi ordered a monument to be erected at the west end of the bridge to record the rebuilding of Lugou bridge. At the east end of the bridge stands the Lugou Xiaoyue stele inscribed by Qianlong. In 1908, after the death of Emperor Guangxu of Qing Dynasty, he was buried in the Qingxiling of Yixian County, Hebei Province, and had to pass through the Lugou bridge. As the bridge deck was narrow, the stone railings beside the bridge had to be removed and a wooden bridge was built. Afterwards, the stone railings were restored as they were. The July 7th Lugouqiao Incident in Lugouqiao on July 7th, 1937, became the starting point of China's eight year Anti Japanese war against Japan. After the founding of the people's Republic of China, asphalt was added to the bridge deck, the footpath was widened, and the stone lion pavilion was repaired. In 1961, Lugouqiao and nearby Wanping county were announced as the first batch of national key cultural relics protection units. In 1971, Lugou new bridge was built to protect Lugou Bridge and reduce its traffic volume, but Lugou bridge still continues to undertake the task of transportation. In 1986, the historical relics restoration Committee of Lugou bridge was established to restore the original appearance of the bridge. The project demolished the asphalt paved after 1949 and the widened footpath in 1967, restored the original appearance of the old bridge, and moved the traffic of motor vehicles to the adjacent Lugou new bridge and the later Beijing Shijiazhuang expressway.
