Shangyou Township originally belongs to Tongkuan Town, the Fourth District of Yi'an county. It was changed from upstream commune to Shangyou Township in 1984. Historical evolution

Shangyou Township originally belonged to Tongkuan Town, the Fourth District of Yi'an county. In the 18th year of the Republic of China (October 1929), it was assigned to Keshan County. In the thirtieth year of the Republic of China (September 1941), it was assigned to Yi'an county. In March 1946, Tongkuan district was established.

In 1950, it was renamed the third district.

In May 1955, it was renamed Tongkuan district.

In February 1956, it belonged to Yibei district; in August, the district changed to township.

In September 1958, the Township Reform commune was established.

In 1966, it was renamed upstream commune.

In 1984, the commune was transformed into a township.
