In 1956, shaogensumu was built from deborenutuk (District). In 1958, it was changed into shaogen commune. In 1984, it was changed into Sumu. In 1996, it was changed to shaogen town. In 2006, Qaidam, Sumu and Daode towns were merged into shaogen town. In June 2020, shaogen town governs 23 administrative villages.
