After the publication of this novel, although it was welcomed by readers and brought Conrad economic success, it was regarded as an unimportant work by the critics at that time. Critics of later generations affirmed the achievement of this work and considered it "a rather complicated allegorical novel, whose psychological description and narrative structure laid the foundation for modern novels". Some critics believe that it is one of the main sources of inspiration for Vladimir Nabokov's famous work Lolita.

About the author

Joseph Conrad (1857-1924), born in Poland, could not speak English fluently until he was 20 years old. He published his first novel when he was 38 years old, but he is regarded as one of the greatest novelists in English. At the age of 17, he went to Marseilles to study sailing and lived at sea for more than 20 years. At the age of 36, because of his poor health and obsession with writing, he gave up his life at sea and began to write novels. Conrad, one of the pioneers of modern British fiction, published more than 40 short stories in his life. His narrative style and anti hero characterization have influenced many later writers, including D.H. Lawrence, F.S. Fitzgerald, William Faulkner, Ernest Hemingway, Italo Calvino, Garcia Marquez, v.s. Naipaul, J.M. Coetzee and many other literary masters.
