Shuguang was named as Shuguang Township in 1957 when it was co-operative, which is still in use today. Shuguang township is located in the southeast of Zhenyuan County. It has 9 administrative villages with 19245 people, 101 square kilometers of land area and 50600 mu of cultivated land.

Shuguang township is located in the southwest of Nayong County in Guizhou Province, 45 km away from the county, 105 ° 12 ′～ 105 ° 20 ′ E and 26 ° 40 ′ n. It is adjacent to Baixing town and Zhangjiawan Town in the East, bide town in Shuicheng County in the west, Yangchang town in the north and Fuling town in the southeast. Shuguang Township belonged to Dafang County before 1941, and then belonged to Nayong. In 1953, the two townships of Jiake were merged into the rat farm township. At the same time, Hexi Township, Zuogong Township and changchong Township were established. In 1956 and 1957, Zuogong township was changed into Zuogong management area. In 1958, rat farm, branch and changchong established people's commune respectively, and at this time, haizuo and Hexi merged into Hexi commune correspondingly; in 1959, Zuogong people's commune was established. In 1966, ratfield commune and Jiake commune were merged into Shuguang commune; changchong commune and Zuogong commune were merged into Zuogong commune. In 1970, Zuogong commune was divided into Zuogong commune and changchong commune. In 1981, the general survey of place names was changed to chachong commune with the approval of the higher authorities. In 1984, with the construction of rural grassroots organizations, the communes were changed into Shuguang Township, Zuogong Township and chachong Township respectively; Hexi commune was divided into Hexi Township and haizuo Township, and now haizuo Township belongs to Yangchang town. The government is located at dashujiao of rat farm village. It has jurisdiction over 27 villages, 145 natural villages and 205 villager groups.
