The town of Guazhou in Anxi county is located in the inland. It has a typical continental climate with less rainfall, long sunshine and large temperature difference between day and night. The unique climate makes the melons produced in this town sweet and honey like, and the entrance produces body fluid, so it is called Guazhou. There was a beautiful folk legend: when King Mu of Zhou was on a tour to the west, the queen mother of the West set up a melon banquet to entertain him. When the melon picking fairy passed Anxi, she accidentally slipped and dropped the melon from the sky. Since then, the melon has settled down here. Anxi County has a long history of melon cultivation. As early as the Han and Tang Dynasties, Anxi melon was well-known. In the west, it crossed Congling mountains and became a favorite of the western regions. In the East, it entered Chang'an and offered to the royal family as a rare tribute. "Han geography records" contains: "ancient Guazhou to the United States melon, the elderly fox into the melon to eat, head and tail not out." The ancients have a poem that says: "April 8 in Guazhou, cuckoo crows at the right place; looking back at the purple Road, there is no place without melons.". In the Ming and Qing Dynasties, there were Guazhou counties. In 1955, tougong, Guazhou and Sangong were merged into tougong township. In 1958, Wuai people's commune was formed with Huancheng Township, Nancha Township, Yuanquan Township and Xihu township. In 1959, Guazhou commune was established. In 1968, it was changed to Hongwei commune. In 1971, it was restored to its original name. In 1983, it has been changed to township.
