Guantai township is located in Guanyinqiao, formerly known as shejiachang. In the Ming Dynasty, there was a stone statue of Guanyin beside the bridge, which later became known as Guanyin bridge. Before liberation, Guantai belonged to Erli, Dongxiang, Mianyang county.

In 1941, the new county system was adopted. Erli of Dongxiang was changed into a township, and Guanyinchang and taipingchang (now Jianhua township) were named Guantai township. After liberation, it was still in use.

In 1958, the Guantai people's commune was established by 24 high-level communes.

In 1967, it was renamed Qunfeng commune at the beginning of the cultural revolution.

In 1978, it was restored to Guantai commune.

In 1984, the establishment of the commune was abolished, and Guantai township was established again, belonging to Liujia district (now Liujia town)

In 1992, the district was removed to build a town, and guantaishan was set as guantaixiang.

In 2015, Guantai town was established from township.
