It is one of the two minority townships in Guanyang County, with an administrative area of 212.2 square kilometers. In ancient times, it belonged to Jining Township and Chongshun fort. In October 1984, it was separated from Guanyinge commune and established Dongjing Yao township. By the end of 2018, the total population of Dongjing Yao township is 9399, including 8856 agricultural population and 3660 Yao ethnic minority. By the end of 2019, it has jurisdiction over 9 administrative villages and the township government is located at No. 026 Dongjing street.

It is named because it is similar to Bijia mountain. The elevation is 1287 meters, which is the second highest peak of the township. It is also one of the main peaks at the south end of Haiyangshan Gentle.
