QianShui Town, a town under the jurisdiction of Wuchuan City, Zhanjiang City, Guangdong Province, is located in the northeast of the city. It is adjacent to Maonan District, Zhensheng Town, Gongguan town and Tongqing town in the East, North and West, and Changqi town in Wuchuan in the south. It is an old revolutionary town. Shallow water polder is the seat of the town, 22 kilometers away from Wuchuan City. Covering an area of 78.09 square kilometers (2017), it has 8 administrative areas and 97 natural villages.

History and culture

Changqi commune was established in Wuchuan from 1961 to 1966, then Qianjin commune was established. It was changed into shallow water commune in 1969, changed into district commune in 1983, and established as a town in 1987. There are many historic sites in the town. The tomb of Lin Shaotang, the number one scholar in the Guangxu period of the Qing Dynasty, is in Sheling, Shuangtang village, Shuangtang District, and the tomb of general Peng Yu is in bianling, Dongtang village, Yangmei district. Most of the surnames in this town are Ke.

Township economy

The industry of Qianshui town includes red brick, leather, patchouli oil, glass products, hat making, shoe making, paper making, building materials, etc. Agriculture is dominated by rice, sugarcane and vegetables transported to the north. The area of sugarcane accounts for more than 50% of Wuchuan City, with an annual output of more than 20000 tons of sugarcane and more than 40000 mu of forest land. It is rich in Eucalyptus, warm ground pine, and subtropical crops such as rubber and coffee. Qianshui town has convenient transportation, Guangzhan Expressway and Meimao highway pass through the town, and fair trade is active in Weizhen town.

In 2008, the total output value of industry and agriculture of the whole town was 420 million yuan, an increase of 8.5% over the previous year. The fiscal and tax revenue was 3.58 million yuan, and the per capita income of farmers was 1900 yuan, an increase of 1.70% over the previous year.

River Basin Water Environment

The water quality of Sanya River has deteriorated to worse than Class V for several years

Sanya River, gentle mother river, in the impression of shallow water people, the only thing left is the clean back. The tributary of Xiaodongjiang river originates from Bijialing, Huazhou, Maoming, flows through QianShui Town, Wuchuan City, Zhanjiang, and is named after three branches at the junction of Huazhou and Wuchuan. Like many rivers, Sanya River used to be "as clear as a mirror".

Since 1995, QianShui Town, which is about 20 kilometers away from Wuchuan City, has taken water from Sanya River and built a waterworks. Local officials familiar with the situation recall that when the Sanya River reached QianShui Town, the water quality reached class III or higher, and the water pump of the waterworks was directly in the river. Until 2006, the water quality of sanyaqiao section, the junction of Huazhou and Wuchuan of Sanya River, was still class III.

No one expected that five years later, the water quality of the section would deteriorate to inferior class v. Recently, the reporter saw in Sanya bridge that the river water, black as ink and smelly as dung water, roared past the gate. The conclusion of several water quality inspection reports issued by Wuchuan Center for Disease Control and prevention in 2014 is that the source water, ex factory water and peripheral water of Qianshui town waterworks do not meet the requirements of relevant standards.

In 2009, Qianshui town waterworks dug a well beside Sanya River, and the water intake pump was moved from the river to the well. However, due to the distance of only about 10 meters from Sanya River, it is still not recognized by residents. Since 2012, most residents in Qianshui town no longer drink tap water, but groundwater instead. Drilling a well has become the standard configuration for town residents to build new houses.

Ke Laifu, director of the town's Waterworks, said that most of the waterworks failed to meet the water quality standards. My family also dig a well to drink.

Others have no choice. Liang Meiyan of Xinwu village in Qianshui town rents a house to accompany her children in order to enjoy better education resources. Because the landlord has been away for many years, the well is abandoned, and tap water is the only choice. Liang Meiyan could not afford to buy a water purifier, so she had to use soil method to filter. She placed sand and gravel wrapped in gauze in the bucket to let the tap water seep slowly.

"The situation of water environment in the basin is very serious." For Sanya River, the main tributary of Xiaodongjiang River, the provincial environmental protection department evaluated in the regulation plan that the concentrations of ammonia nitrogen and total phosphorus in the main stream and most tributaries of Xiaodongjiang River were inferior to those in surface water class v. Living in a humid area where the precipitation is greater than the evaporation, guarding the Xiaodongjiang River and Sanya River passing through the city, it is difficult to drink clean tap water, which is a bit embarrassing reality.
